A semen analysis is a quantitative assessment of semen used to evaluate sperm count, motility, and morphology. The recommended period of sexual abstinence is a maximum of 3 days (sexual abstinence refers to the absence of ejaculation).
The recommended collection method is masturbation. If collection by this method is not possible (due to personal, physical, religious, psychological, or other reasons), the assisted reproduction center staff is available to provide information regarding alternative options.
For proper semen sample collection through masturbation, it is recommended to urinate before collection. After urination, hands and the penis should be washed thoroughly with soap and water. Uncircumcised men should retract the foreskin and clean the area underneath carefully. The penis should not be dried afterward.
The entire semen sample should be collected in the sterile container provided by the assisted reproduction center. Any loss of ejaculate, especially the first portion, which contains the highest concentration of sperm, must be reported to the center staff, as this information is important for the interpretation of the results. The container should be handled carefully to avoid contamination. Any accidental contact with the inside walls of the container or the interior of the lid should also be reported to the staff.
After collection, the container should be closed carefully and left in the location indicated by the assisted reproduction center staff.
We recommend that sample collection be performed at the assisted reproduction center. If this is not possible (due to personal, physical, religious, psychological, or other reasons), the center staff will provide guidance regarding available alternatives.
Any antibiotic treatment, other medications, periods of significant stress, existing health conditions, or the use of alcohol, tobacco, or recreational drugs should be reported to the assisted reproduction center staff to ensure accurate interpretation of the results.
In addition, according to the WHO guidelines, at least two semen analyses performed within a three-week interval are required for accurate interpretation and the establishment of a correct diagnosis.
The results of this test can help identify potential fertility issues and guide the selection of the most appropriate treatment.
